About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The historical Benin Kingdom is an option for UK primary teachers at KS2, and is a great choice for those who are keen to diversify their curriculum.

She knows that a special amber coloured stone buried among the trees was put there specially for her and as her curiosity increases, she becomes more determined to find out where she came from. Children of the Benin Kingdom is fast paced adventure story, set in one of Africa’s most fascinating civilisations, the Edo Kingdom of Benin.Eze disturbs her and realises it is now time to tell Ada about her heritage as the daughter of a queen. The plot was good because each chapter ended in a shocking way and the beginning of the new chapter gave me a sense of relief. Relying on her close friendships, the guidance of her ancestors and her own self-belief, Ada sets off on an incredible journey which tests her strengths to their limit. In summary this book is about a girl who finds out her father is the Sky-king and that Papa Eze who is Ada’s guardian offered to look after her for Ada’s mother.

PLEASE NOTE: From 1st of July 2021, shipments from the UK to EU countries will be subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) charges. He deserved to be overthrown but instead of letting it happen, he tried to have kids murdered to stop it. Eze teaches Ada his knowledge and skill in the ways of the forest but she feels something is missing and wants to find out more about her ancestors. The thing that most stands out was the three descriptions of the journey through the forest that Mbe and Ada took. I would recommend this book to my friend because he really likes adventure and this book is full of adventure. The story is rich in historical detail and the cultural traditions of West Africa and as accurate historical fiction it is also perfect for celebrating Black history.

Shortlisted for the Historical Association's Young Quills Award 2021 for the best children's fiction. My least favourite character was Ujo pronounced oo-jor because he betrayed papa Eze and Ada to the Edo king (the sky king) Ogiso. The book follows the story of Ada, who discovers her true identity and must travel into the heart of the rainforest to heal the divisions that are occurring within the kingdom. This is an immersive adventure story and perfect for any child who enjoys being transported to another world. My favourite character is Papaeze because he can heal the sick like Jesus but the worst character is chief Ewe because he treats people very terribly. Written by British Nigerian author Dinah Orji, the book appeals to any child that likes to be transported to another world and is about friendship, loyalty and the bonds of family. It isn't a challenging read at all, but in conjunction with the notes at the end, is a fascinating introduction to a period of history about which little is known in the UK. It fits well with the increasing interest in African fiction and stories that are inclusive, diverse and explore a greater range of cultures, stories and settings.

Reviews "This is a gripping adventure story that offers something fresh and original to the middle grade historical fiction market. A riveting historical adventure … as much about friendship and loyalty and the bonds of family as a quest for identity. Pursued by those who want her dead, Ada sets off on an incredible journey which tests her strengths to their limit with just her close friends, the guidance of her ancestors and her own self-belief to help her. There will also be plenty of opportunities to practise reading skills and take part in discussions around the events of the story.

When reading this book, you become completely absorbed into the culture of the West African people … because the story is rich and gripping. On the path of the hunters, often Ada and her friends are the ones being hunted and this journey is a test of strength, self-belief, faith and bravery in the face of warriors and chiefs who show no mercy. Books for Keeps, children’s fiction magazine “When reading this book, you become completely absorbed into the culture of the West African people … because the story is rich and gripping.
